Format of Assessments

What to expect on the day. Choose your assessment below to see how the time is spent.

Please allow approximately 5 hours for a combined ASD/ADHD neurodevelopmental assessment.

During the first 15 minutes, there is time to settle in, and go through the plan for the day. There will then be a discussion aimed at your child/ young person, about how they find school and home life, which will take approximately 30 minutes.

Then the ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) will take place for approximately 1 hour without parents present. The ADOS is a relaxed, structured session involving conversation and a few activities. There are no right or wrong answers; it simply helps the clinician understand how the young person communicates, interacts and experiences the world.

There will then be a 20-30-minute break, giving you an opportunity to take a break, have a wander and get some lunch or a snack.

Following the break, parents will spend approximately 1.5-2 hours with one of our clinicians for discussion, while the child/young person will be in an adjacent room completing a cognitive session (if required). This part of the assessment may vary depending on the age of the child but usually takes 1-1.5 hours. Snacks and short breaks can be taken during this if required.

A 15-minute movement break will then be offered if needed. Following this, the QB Check, an ADHD diagnostic screening tool, will take place, which lasts 15-20 minutes.

Following completion of the assessment, it will be discussed how you would like to receive verbal feedback. This is typically done with parents first initially and then, with the child and young person joining the discussion at the end.

Please allow approximately 3 hours for an ADHD assessment.
